Planning an oil drill

Some years ago, I met a man who plans drills for water. It's a very profitable field from where he comes from: in the desert, water is gold. But it also require sconsiderable knowledge to calculate where water is, and any misestimations are extremely costly when your investor is sinking several million or more into a well. It is also fascinating the level of detail that he can extract by surface measurements alone – including all the different layers of earth and stone and their respective depths and their composition between the desert and the ground water.

Oil drilling is, I would assume, no different. If anything, this article makes it seem easier than drilling for water in the desert. At any rate, it is a field which could use a lot of optimization and sharp AI analysis, in particular concerning rig safety, not just oilfield exploration.
