This is scary: if the leaked cable is true, Monsanto, the company that is responsible for producing genetically modified seeds that account for over 90 percent of US agriculture, and holds a patent on the"terminator gene", which causes seeds saved from one years harvest to not germinate, and the same company which puts farmers in the US out of business by dragging on Court cases in Apple style (only farmers typically can't afford lawyers the way Htc can), wants the US government to pick wars with countries that don't buy Monsanto seed.
That is a bad. Putting world agricultural grain supply in hands of am anti-competitive corporation is not a good idea, especially when that corporation has used the terminator gene before: I support biotech as a solution to meeting growing world hunger demands, but not with practices that prevent farmers from growing crops in a sustainable manner. I also do not believe that denying innovation from other sectors from entering the US market (e g blocking Nokia from the US market) because its hq country does not have enough Monsanto customers is the answer to fostering innovation around the globe.
Of course, the game may well be in American military state interests… But the world would probably be better off without. I just wonder if the rest of the world can band together in time to stop them from succeeding, be it through trade agreements and councils without the USA, ratifying DIY ecology to enable build-a-village kits to succeed by protecting access to affordable, ecologically sustainable grain as a fundamental right, or any other countermeasure to give humanity and global innovation a chance.
